Drop-stitch fabric is two PVC-coated layers joined by thousands of polyester threads that keep an inflatable board flat and rigid at 12–20 PSI. Single-layer boards are lightest and cheapest; fusion (laminated) boards add stiffness with little extra weight; double-layer boards are the heaviest but most durable, which suits rental fleets.
How drop-stitch works
Drop-stitch material consists of two sheets of base fabric connected by thousands of fine threads. When the chamber is inflated the threads pull tight, keeping the top and bottom flat and parallel. That is why an inflatable paddle board can be stiff enough to stand on at around 15 PSI.
Construction comparison
| Build | Weight | Stiffness | Durability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-layer | Lightest | Good | Good | Entry kits, kids, light riders |
| Fusion / laminated (MSL) | Light | Very good | Very good | All-round retail, touring |
| Double-layer (hand-glued) | Heaviest | Very good | Excellent | Rental, schools, heavy use |
| Woven drop-stitch | Light | Excellent | Very good | Performance & foil boards |
Thickness and pressure
Adult all-round boards are typically 15 cm (6") thick and inflated to about 12–15 PSI. Thinner 10–12 cm boards sit closer to the water and suit kids or light riders. Rails are usually reinforced with extra PVC strips to protect seams and add stiffness.
Buyer's checklist
- Ask which drop-stitch type and how many rail layers are used.
- Request the board weight with and without accessories.
- Check the recommended and maximum pressure.
- Ask for a 24-hour pressure-hold test in the QC report.
- Confirm the fin box type and valve standard.
Which should you choose?
For e-commerce and mass retail, single-layer or fusion boards hit the best balance of price and weight. For rental fleets and schools, double-layer construction pays for itself in longevity. Explore our inflatable SUP boards or talk to our team about the right build for your channel.
Frequently asked questions
What PSI should an iSUP be inflated to?
Most adult boards are designed for about 12–15 PSI. Always follow the maximum pressure printed near the valve.
Is double-layer always better?
Not always. It is more durable but heavier and more expensive. Fusion boards are often the best all-round choice for retail.
How can I check build quality?
Ask for weight data, the drop-stitch type, rail layers and a pressure-hold QC test.
